Statement by Taleb Rifai, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization
On behalf of the World Tourism Organization, and of the international tourism community, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the Westgate atrocious attack as well as to the government of Kenya in this tragic moment.
Kenya is a leading tourism destination which has before shown the extraordinary resilience of its tourism sector.
It is important that the international community stands by Kenya at this important moment.
Tourism is one of the backbones of Kenya’s society and economy and it is now more important than ever to support the tourism sector in Kenya.
UNWTO expresses its full support and commitment to the tourism sector in Kenya.
Events of this nature tend to have an ever short-lived impact on destinations and we believe Kenya will continue to count on its solid tourism sector to make it the destination of excellence it is today.
