Kenya Basks in Glory as athletics Power House

Kenya is basking in the glory of fame and global recognition as an athletics powerhouse after bagging seventeen medals (17) – Seven (7) Gold Medals, Six (6) Silver Medals and Four (4) Bronze medals in the 2011 World Athletics Championship in Daegu, South Korea.

This exemplary performance catapulted the country to number three position only behind the super powers USA and Russia.

The following athletes did the country proud:-

Gold Medalists:- Edna Kiplagat – Marathon,Abel Kirui – Marathon, Vivian Cheruiyot- 10,000m,5,000m,Asbel Kiprop – 1,500m,David Rudisha – 800m and Ezekiel Kemboi – 3,000m-steeplechase.

Silver Medalists: Prisca Jeptoo – Marathon, Sally Kipyego – 10,000m,Sylvia Kibet – 5,000m,Vincent Kipruto – Marathon,Brimin Kipruto – 3,000m and Silas Kiplagat – 1,500m

Bronze Medalist: Sharon Cherop – Marathon,Linet Maasai – 10,000m,Janeth Jepkosgei 800m and Milcah Chemos – 3,000m

Kenya for a long time has been famed for Marathon races and long track races, a measure of Kenya`s dominance in the field of athletics.

Steeplechase has being a must win race year in - year out. Kenya won Gold and Silver in the race with Kemboi winning three times consecutively.

David Rudisha continued with his exploits in the 800m, making it his own race. It is also worth mentioning the exploits of one Vivian Cheruiyot who won Gold in both 5,000m and 10,000m women races.

Kenya is an ideal training ground for athletes owing to the existing training sites in the high altitude areas of Eldoret, Nyahururu to mention but a few.

The high altitude training camps which are mainly owned by our very own retired heroes and heroines of yester years include:-

•    Kipchoge Keino High Altitude Training Camp in Eldoret
•    Lorna Kiplagat High Altitude Training Center in Iten.

These training facilities yearly attracts hundreds of athletes from across the globe who would want to discover the magic behind Kenya`s success in athletics.
