Kenya's Patrick Makau sets new Marathon Record
Kenya's Patrick Makau won the Berlin marathon, setting a new world record time of 2hr 3min 38sec.
Makau shattered Haile Gebrselassie’s record by 21 seconds over the fast, flat Berlin course on a warm, sunny morning on 25 September 2011.
It was the fifth time the men's world record has fallen on the 42km race through the heart of the German capital.
Florence Kiplagat, Makau's teammate and the world half-marathon champion, won the women's race in 2:19:44 in her first completed marathon.
Makau led clean sweep of the podium positions by Kenya finishing ahead of pacemaker Stephen Kwelio, Edwin Kimaiyo and Felix Limo.
